The entrance to the museum is in the Casa della Reggenza, where a charming ticket-office and bookshop precede the collections.
The first room contains wooden sculptures dating from the 17th–18th centuries, from Lu’s churches, and a display unit of silverware. There is a fine statue of Our Lady of the Rosary and Child, and Our Lady of the Assumption from San Biagio parish church, originally from the ancient Disciplinati church, and a processional crucifix depicting the Holy Trinity, which was used by the Angeli archconfraternity. Silverware consisting of sacred vessels, chalices, monstrances, and liturgical objects illustrate the wealth of ecclesiastical furnishings of local churches from the 16th to the 20th century. The second room exhibits paintings of remarkable value, including Orsola Maddalena Caccia’s Saint Agatha between Saints Catherine of Alexandria and Apollonia (1625) from Sant’Evasio Cathedral in Casale Monferrato, and the Virgin and Child between Saints Roch and Defendens (1630–35) from the church of San Nazario; the canvas Christ Carrying the Cross, attributed to the workshop of Moncalvo; and a fragment of a painting of Saint Charles Borromeo (before 1626) by Pietro Paolo Boffa. The third room, in the sacristy corridor, houses the vestments and several canvases. The sacristy has some splendid wooden furnishings whose upper area includes wood reliquaries dedicated to various saints including Defendens, Aloysius Gonzaga, and Valerius, who is patron of Lu. The section is a display chest of drawers that exhibits chasubles, copes, veils and dalmatics in all their splendour. A wall cabinet has been converted into a display unit for silver reliquaries and liturgical objects.
A canvas of the Martyrdom of Saint James (1779), by Giuseppe Antonio Torcelli, hangs near the entrance by the chancel door in the apse. Returning towards the entrance, the room next to the ticket office exhibits works by Lu-born painter Luigi Onetti.
